Going For a Drive

It was date night. Usually they would have discussed plans and she would know exactly what she should wear. Tonight he’d insisted on surprising her.

This was so far outside of her comfort zone. She liked to know where she was going, what she was eating, and what to wear. But he’d been so excited that she pushed her uneasiness aside and waited.

She heard a car pull into the driveway and resisted the urge to get up. It wasn’t his car so she figured it was someone turning around in their driveway. The front door opened and he greeted her with a huge grin.

“Are you ready to go?”

She smiled and shrugged. “I guess? Am I dressed right?”

“You look perfect,” he said as he took her arm. “Close your eyes and I’ll lead you out.”

“There isn’t a serial killer outside, right?” She laughed nervously.

“It’s going to be great, honey. Just wait.” She closed her eyes and he led her out the door. She heard the key turn in the lock and then they walked toward the driveway. He stopped. “Open your eyes.”

In front of her was a classic convertible. It was cherry red and looked like it had been taken care of beautifully. She sucked in a breath. “It’s beautiful!…wait, you didn’t buy a new car, did you?” The car had to be well out of their budget.

He laughed. “Like I would ever do that without talking to you. Just rented it for the evening. Want to go for a drive?”

“Hell, yes!” He opened the door and she settled in. Everything looked original but better. He got into the driver’s seat and they drove away. The wind was blowing her hair around and the weather was perfect. He turned away from the city and they ended up on some deserted country roads.

He pulled onto a dirt road and a clearing appeared in front of them. “Time for a picnic dinner.” There were sandwiches and a chilled bottle of wine in the picnic basket and he put a blanket on the ground.

“This is perfect,” she said., laying back on the blanket and looking at the stars. “Thank you for my surprise.”

He leaned over to kiss her. “I’m glad you like it.”

She grinned. “After dinner, how about some necking in the backseat?”

“I thought you’d never ask.”
