S is for Sea

“It’s already dark,” he said. “Why can’t we wait until tomorrow to go touch the water? I’m exhausted and starving. I don’t even know if I care enough about starving to not just crash.”

“The ocean is literally just outside our door and you don’t want to go out? Whatever. Order food or go to sleep or whatever. I’ll be back in a while.”

She opened the sliding door and slipped out into the night. She had left the door open a little and he could hear the waves lapping against the shore. He opened his suitcase and started to get out his toiletries.

What a day. The flight was delayed and they missed their connection. By the time they made it here, it had been a really, really long day. Not the best start for their second honeymoon, but he’d be in a better mood tomorrow. And, honestly, they had a full week to enjoy the ocean.

The room felt empty without her here. After 10 years, he was so used to the noise of her presence in his life. Sometimes it was way too loud, but he loved that about her. She was so excited about everything; he loved being pulled along in her wake.

He stopped. Then why had he tried so hard tonight to be an ass? Of course, she would want to go touch the water as soon as they arrived. She loved the sea and could sit for hours and just listen to it.

He had had plans for a surprise dinner and it fell through with the delays. He wanted to impress her with it for their first night so it would set the mood for the rest of the week. And he was angry at the world because it hadn’t happened.

She’d tried so hard to make the delays better. She had found a cute bistro in the restaurant and they had a great lunch. She even bought him a motorcycle magazine that he loved so he had something fun to read on the plane. It wasn’t her fault that he couldn’t get over his disappointment.

Putting aside his toiletries, he took off his shoes, rolled up his pants, and headed to the beach. He could see her hair in the moonlight and she was standing perfectly still in the shallow water. He came up behind her and put his arms around her. She jumped slightly and then nestled back.

“I’m sorry. My only excuse is that my surprise for you was spoiled and I was angry. I took it out on the one person who I wanted to make happy. Can we start again?”

She turned to look at him. “Of course. Want to go for a walk on the beach?”

He nodded. “Can we get food at that place I can see down the way? I really am starving. And then maybe,” he pinched her butt, “we can come back and enjoy that room a little?”

“I think that can be arranged.”

  1. There’s nothing worse than all those setbacks in one day, especially on the first day of a holiday. Let’s hope the rest of the week was better for them 😉
