She sat back and patted her stomach. “That was amazing, honey. I love when you cook for me.” Finishing the last sip of wine in her glass, she stood up.
“Where are you going?”
“To go clean up,” she said. “I always clean up when you cook. And vice versa.”
He shook his head. “Not tonight. I have plans for tonight.” She sat back down.
“The next couple of weeks are going to be crazy and we won’t have time for our usual date nights. So, tonight I planned a surprise.”
“That sounds mysterious. But what about the mess?”
“It will still be there tomorrow. There’s really nothing left except a few crumbs and the dishwasher can handle the mess. Go get your coat and gloves.”
“Outside surprise. How exciting. Am I dressed appropriately?”
He looked at her. “I think you might want jeans and flat shoes.” She raised her eyebrows at him but left to change. He blew out the candles and then heard some bells outside just as she came back.
He helped her put on her coat and then opened the door with a flourish. “Your carriage awaits,” he said as she caught sight of the horse-drawn carriage. Her eyes were shining with excitement as they headed for their ride. The dishes could wait.
